In the early hours of December 18, 2024, the Income Tax department raided the residence, offices, and hospital of the family-run business of Sofat Hospital, one of the leading providers of IVF treatment in Ludhiana. The raid was conducted in the alleged case of tax fraud. The raid took place at five different locations simultaneously: the residence of the Sofat family, the hospital and their offices. The IT department has seized “unaccounted” for cash and documents. However, they have not yet commented on the amount found.
The officials have come out and said that the investigation will proceed for the next few days as their teams analyse the amount of documents seized in the raid. Officials also found three lockers in connection to the family, which were then sealed and seized. The raid occurred as part of a more extensive investigation, wherein the IT department suspected numerous financial irregularities.
Although there were several rumours circulating that the Sofat Hospital employees would also be subjected to scrutiny, the IT officials have clarified that at this stage of the investigation, only the Sofat family members are being looked into.
The investigation is expected to last a few more days as the IT department further analyses and inspects the seized documents. The investigation has brought attention to the various financial practices and family property dealings.
The Sofat family has declined all requests for a statement or comment on the subject matter.
